Word family work is fun with these cute animals. This package includes 6 game boards, making it perfect for centers. 22 word families are covered:
-all, -ell, -ill -ash, -ish, -ush -ack, -ick, -ock, -uck
-at, -et, -ut -an, -en, -in, -un -ag, -eg, -ig, -og, -ug
There are 32 initial letter/blend cards for each board. Word ending "helper" cards allow students to physically try out combinations. An optional recording sheet is provided. 2-4 players can participate.
To prepare: Print & laminate the game boards and cards. Cut apart the cards. An optional recording sheet can be photocopied. You need a marker for each player and a 1-6 die.
To play: Decide which game board you will be using. Select the color coded initial letter/blend cards and the “helper” cards.
Shuffle the word cards into a facedown pile.
Give each player a marker. Players can start on the star of their choice.
Players take turns rolling the die and moving clockwise around the board, then flipping over the top word card. The player determines if the letter(s) on the card can be combined with the word family on the space (using the helper cards if needed).
If a word is formed the player reads it and keeps the card.
If a real word is not formed the card goes in a discard pile.

If a player chooses a card which has the same animal as the space he/she landed on the player gets an extra turn.
Shuffle and reuse the discard pile until all the word cards have been used.
The player with the most cards wins.
