This is a fun toy to make with art classes at any age level. These little paper "beans" will wiggle in your hand, doing back-flips as you roll them lightly back and forth. When set at the top of a book or note pad, a bit higher at one end, the jumping bean with roll gracefully down the inclined plane "head over heels."
Print on plain copier 8.5 x 11 white paper, cut out and assemble.Card stock is too heavy, and if used, the toys will not operate properly. Before sealing shut with tape or glue, insert a marble. That is the secret to the surprising movements that fascinate children of all ages.
There are two versions. One comes with three Mexican jumping beans in full color. The second had blank templates for students to design and color themselves. These can be used on any occasion.
I even had one student turn one into a miniature Winnebago bus.
Small bags of marbles can be found at many dollar stores and are inexpensive. This is very economical project and can be completed in a half hour to forty-five minute class, depending on the age of your students. Small children will need help cutting and folding on the dotted lines, but seeing their delighted reactions is worth the trouble.
