Description

Great collaborative activity as you head back to school, or anytime during the year!

The “Create a Cafeteria” Maker Task challenges students to dream of ways that a cafeteria in their school could be the ultimate spot for refueling and relaxing with friends. Students are asked to plan and construct a model cafeteria that would meets the needs of all students, and be a welcoming and fun place to visit and interact. All aspects of STEAM should be used in the planning and building of the cafeteria model.

Why ask students to design a cafeteria? What’s wrong with the one already in place? Often, a cafeteria is not a priority in school design. I personally have worked in buildings in which the cafeteria was simply a hallway with tables or an empty classroom with tables. In some districts, the cafeteria used by kindergarten students is just like the one used by middle schoolers. If yours is already perfect, it may not have been created with any student input. Wouldn’t you like to know what your students are thinking? Their design ideas might also lead to some positive changes that you could make for managing behaviors and traffic patterns. This could add to the lunchtime experience that you are able to provide!

You may choose to have your students take this challenge only so far as the design process without actually building the model cafeteria. The building of the model could be suggested as an at-home project. Of course, with enough materials in your Maker Space boxes, the construction of the models could easily happen in your classroom or school Maker Space.
