The “Design a Classroom” Maker Task challenges students to dream of a classroom setting that would be comfortable, collaborative, and conducive to learning. Students are asked to plan and construct a model of their vision of the perfect classroom. All aspects of STEAM should be used in the planning and building of each learning space model.
Why ask students to design a classroom? Students have changed over the years, and so have our expectations for them. We often ask students to engage in new learning situations and groupings within the same spaces and configurations that have been in place for the past fifty years. What if we listened to the voices of our students when contemplating changes in seating, displays, and groupings of furniture? What if we were able to provide some of the spaces that students tell us would help them to be more productive and successful? Incorporating some of their ideas could produce some amazing results!
