Whether you are teaching your students everyday life skills, social skills, or simply how to advocate for their own needs, practicing calling to make one's own appointments is a great skill to foster independence. The script includes one "unexpected" phone call scenario where, akin to Mad Libs, students can fill in the blanks with silly and unreal personal information. The expected phone call situation has students draw on their knowledge of their own personal information to practice calling a doctor's office. In my class, we have a teacher or student pretend to be the receptionist in one classroom, and have the students practice calling that room. Using a real phone and talking over the phone helps generalize the skill. Enjoy!
