Making Big Purchases in the Real World Adding Decimals Activity
Common Core Alignment
It is always great for students to see how math skills taught will be used in the real world. This project allows students to see how adding decimals is a skill used in the real world. In this project, students are given a large sum of money to make 8 major purchases that adults would typically buy (house, car, vacation, etc). Some of the money amounts for items are given with just dollars (no cents), but most do have cents. Students will need to accurately line up their place values so that their totals are correct. In addition, to finding the actual total, students will have to find an estimated total. As an added challenge, students need to make sure they do not go over their budget with the items they purchase, but their budget is pretty generous. There are follow-up questions at the end, as well as some activity extension questions for those students who need a challenge. When I did this activity with my students, they raved about it for weeks after.
I know your students will enjoy this activity as much as mine did!
