Overview: This Power point is designed to help students learn to count change in a step by step manner. Each word problem slide is followed by an animated counting change slide. The problems progress from making change for a dime through making change for $10.00. The final 2 slides are graphic organizer mats for counting change and dollars. They should be printed, front to back, and laminated for students to use as they learn to count change.
Directions for use: Give each student a practice mat and coins. Display the word problem slide and assist the students in setting up their mat. They should write in the “Cost of Item” and the “Amount given to the Clerk”. Advance to the graphic organizer slide which follows each word problem. These two dollar amounts are displayed.
Inform students when counting change, they first say the “Cost of Item” and then begin to count up to the “Amount given to the Clerk”, beginning with the smallest coin value. As they move a coin to their mat, the animation helps them know what to say. The “Total so Far” step has been included to reduce the need to start over. Some students may need help knowing when to switch to a larger coin value. Once they have reached the “Amount given to the Clerk”, they slide all coins to the final column on the right called “Change”. Direct students to count and record the total the amount.
