Attach these connection STOP signs to popsicle sticks, and give to students while you are conducting a read-aloud. The students raise the sticks whenever they make a connection to what you have read. My students LOVED this, and stayed focused during each reading. I would have them simply raise the stick for a few seconds whenever they had a connection, instead of having the multiple hands raise up as I read. We stop every few pages to discuss connections in partners, and then have a discussion at the end of the reading. Having the sticks allows the students to stay focused on the reading, and eliminates the multiple questions and comments that are constantly brought up during reading. These can also be helpful for individual student use, to help them remember to make connections as they read independently.
