For this sorting activity, the students will sort the r-controlled vowel /ur/– er, ir, ur words within three different gift bags or paper bags. (Use the provided game sorting labels to glue onto the gift bags or paper bags.) As the students sort the cupcake cards, they will also use their decoding skills to read these words. After sorting the cards, they will choose three r-controlled vowel /ur/ words- one -er, one -ir, and one -ur word and write them within complete sentences on the provided worksheet.
Another idea may be to print out the cupcake cards twice in order to play Go Fish or Memory with them.
