This exercise was made to go with grade 5 Eureka/Engage NY Math unit 2 lessons 17 and 18, although it can be used with any math program or at any time for review. Students use basic facts to approximate quotients with two-digit divisors as they try to capture the Beguiling Bug Monster. If you haven't done this lesson is Engage NY, the estimates are based on first rounding the divisor to the nearest 10 and then finding basic facts using the multiples of the divisor. This is the tricky part to teach and have students practice, so they may need to go through this deck a few times as that is the method of estimation is used for each card. For example: using 2,354 /58, the 58 rounds to 60, knowing the basic fact 6 x 4 = 24, we would change 2,354 to 2,400 so that the estimate would be 2,400/60 = 40.
These decks were created to complement the Eureka/Engage NY grade 5 unit, but can easily be used with any math program or at any time of the year for review.
There is a random "Capture the Monster" boom card in each game, but you can also reward students with the printable collectible reward cards.
