The subtleties of joining a group and a conversation and just plain hanging out can be extremely difficult for those with social cognitive deficits. This social story aims at the upper elementary, middle school and high schooler. We define what is hanging out with a basic concrete explanation first - that your body is in the group and everyone is talking and thinking (brain is also in the group) about the same thing. Common topics are reiterated and contrasted, using perspective taking thought bubble, of what other kids think we you say random and silly things. I have linked 2 great videos from YouTube on joining conversations that I have used time and time again that are great adjuncts to this lesson.
