Generalizing can be very difficult for students to do independently, despite authentically teaching it and applying it to texts through close and independent reading. Still needing my students to grasp this topic, I started to think outside of the box. In this activity, your students will conduct a survey, and then graph their results in bar graph form. From their data they should be able to make generalizations. I have included multiple versions of this activity for differentiation:
A filled table and graph with “”fake data” that answers the question, “What is your favorite color?” (pages 4-5)
Answer key of generalizations made from given data (page 10)
An empty table with a question provided, “What is your favorite color?” Use in conjunction with the empty graph for students to complete and make generalizations from. (6-7)
An empty table where students can come up with their own survey question as well as an empty graph for students to complete and make generalizations from. (8-9)
