My AVID students needed to work on making inferences, so I created this activity where they became detectives.
I bagged up "evidence bags" with items from around my house (for example: a bike pump, foreign money, a padlock, a punched frozen yogurt card, and a bandage). Then I gave the students this instruction sheet and blank grid where they could work in groups to make inferences about the evidence. (For example, the padlock is not broken, so someone must have had a key.)
After this, they filmed short news segments with their phones, describing the crime and explaining the evidence. We watched the videos as a class.
