Students engage in developing skills and strategies to put information together from two sources. Students engage in a mystery where they must use a case file and a crime scene photo to make inferences based on the evidence provided. Inferential questions challenge students to find valid evidence to defend their inferences. Once they have analyzed the texts, students synthesize the information by solving the crime.

When Nature Calls
A group of campers go hiking on a beautiful summer day. They come to a cliff overlooking a vast landscape. The trip takes a quick turn for the worst when they discover the body of Stu D. Fliers. They take a picture of the crime scene, leaving out the dead body for respect. There were four people have been in the area. What happened at this camping spot? It is up to your students to take the lead detective role and reconstruct the events that happened that day.
Stamp Out The Killer
An accidental shooting, a priceless stamp stolen, and the "Bargain Shoppers" gang has been caught and questioned. The only problem is that the gang is remaining quiet and won't turn on one another. Your students will lead an investigation to look at the clues left behind and figure out who shot Stan Kolhector.
All That Glamour
Who stole Ms. Elle O' Quint's beautiful emerald bracelet? There appears to be a lot of clues in her hotel room that will lead to solving this case. Your students are the lead detectives to help figure out who stole this priceless bracelet.
The Lunch Bunch
What was meant to be a nice meal with friends, quickly turned turns to the theft of a diamond necklace. Who yelled fire? Which "friend" couldn't resist the urge to take the necklace? Your students are the lead detectives in determining which one of the "Lunch Bunch" went away with more than they can chew.
Roasted Kitchen Mystery
Little Joe King is a handful. What happened to the charred kitchen? Why was Joe King there watching? Who was the large man that Joe King was talking about? Was it an accident or arson? Your students must work as the lead investigators to figure out the answers to these questions.
The Missing Lunatic
Luna Tick has stolen $100,000 from a local bank. She has evaded the police and was last scene at a farmhouse. Evidence points to where she can be found, however, police can't figure out the location. It is up to your students to take the lead on the investigation and see if they can locate where the police should look for Luna Tick before she can escape.
Everything is Okay
What happens when someone that is the most disliked person in town has his boat drifting in a cove with evidence of suspicious activity? Is he alive, or has his life come to a tragic end? Do people mourn or celebrate? Before people can do anything, students must lead an investigation to figure out what really happened to Don Keigh.
Cliff Diver Mystery
A car dives over the edge of the cliff by Death Curve. It flips continuously and explodes at the bottom of the cliff. Nobody can figure out the exact reason for the crash, or the cause of death. Your students will lead an investigation in trying to figure out what caused Chris P. Mann to go over the cliff.
Your students will be stronger at inferring with this activity because:
✐Students are engaged in the work by taking the role of detective and engaging in fun mysteries.
✐The questions are inferential in nature and presented in an organizer that helps students understand that all good inferences need valid evidence.
✐Students can work in pairs and argue their viewpoints based upon the evidence they have gathered for the inferences they make.
✐These arguments lead to stronger reasoning skills, and provide a self-assessment opportunity for sorting which inferences are strong from those that are weaker.
✐Students hone their writing skills as the final question asks them to synthesize all information to create a final reflection of the mystery.
How each lesson works:
⛏Students read a mystery scenario and view a picture that serves as "The Crime Scene".
⛏Students read through inferential questions and use the text and picture to create evidence.
⛏They must determine valid evidence from evidence not connected to their inference.
⛏Students debate their inferences and evidence to strengthen their reasoning.
⛏In the end, they write a final answer that puts all the clues together.
