Even though our students make inferences each day, teaching this reading skill to elementary students can be challenging. This lesson will help students understand the process of making inferences by using text and pictures as evidence. They will learn how to express their background knowledge in writing and see how both combined help them make a good inference.
This lesson includes the use of short movies (links included in the lesson plan) without dialogue to provide practice in finding explicit evidence in a character's actions, interactions and the setting. Students then use the same strategies with picture cards and then text to create a graphic organizer to support their reasoning.
Included in the 20 page Making Inferences Lesson is a detailed lesson plan, internet links to short movies for activity, activity resources, graphic organizers, answer key, anchor chart poster, picture cards, center activity and recording sheets.
