Students read three short passages about Poe's mysterious death, and then make inferences about the cause of his death, supporting their theories with evidence from the passages. This activity works well individually, with partners, or in groups. Students close read all three passages, or assign different passages to student groups. Discussion over competing theories can get passionate! This is a great way to get students engaged. Makes a good pre-reading activity for The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Cask of Amontillado, or any Poe text! Aligned with common core and TEKS standards for use of textual evidence to support inference.
