Some children are very resilient and don’t seem to mind making a mistake every once in a while. However, if you have a student who gets anxiety over it and has a melt down or an extremely hard time recovering, then this story is for him! This story sets the stage by talking at a very concrete level about learning and practice. Using similar concepts to that of the growth mindset, we talk about how our brains grow and get stronger from this. We use our expected and unexpected language as well. Using self-talk strategies, we put into perspective what size the problem is. We also talk about
needing to match your reaction to the size of the problem, which of course is a little problem (a mistake on my work). We also remind our student that they can use a calming strategy (physical – a breathing exercise and a form of progressive muscle relaxation) if they need.
