Gilbert Goldfish Wants a Pet is a great story to use for making predictions, using picture clues, or to read during a pet unit in kindergarten.
Instructions for making predictions:
Read almost all of the book but stop when you get to the page where Gilbert sees a shadow. Have your students make a prediction and draw what kind of pet they think Gilbert will get. (For a challenge, have students write down a reason why they picked the pet they did.) After making predictions, finish the book and have students check and see if their prediction was correct or not and write down/draw what kind of pet Gilbert ended up with.
Bonus Paper: What kind of pets did Gilbert think he was getting? Draw and label each pet.
