Knowing the appropriate amount to pay for an item is an important life skill, one in which many students in life skills classrooms exhibit difficulty. Additionally, most people don't carry around exact change for a purchase. The Cost/Pay Tool is a visual aid that allows students to figure out the appropriate amount of dollars to pay for an item up to $20.00.
For example, let's say a item costs $6.38. Students use the Cost/Pay Tool to match the dollar amount of the cost ($6). The Cost/Pay tool then displays next dollar up to pay for the item ($7). The Dollar Up Method is a tried and true strategy to teach this life skill, and the Cost/Pay Tool is a perfect way for students to generalize this critical skill.
Just print out these two pages on card stock and follow the directions at the bottom of the page to put them together. To make them last longer, laminate all the pieces after you cut them out.
