When you think of STAAR vocabulary, you think of word walls, definitions of words in the stories, and how your vocabulary instruction is going to affect their performance. But, have you taught QUESTION vocabulary? Have you ever thought about it? I hadn't....until recently.
What if you could teach your students how to translate the horribly tricky wording of the STAAR reading questions into something much easier? What do you think would happen?
Their comprehension scores will actually INCREASE because the questions become easy to comprehend!!! It worked with my 4th grade students, and it can work with yours, too!
This PowerPoint Presentation will walk your students through how to translate the most common tricky phrases on the 3rd and 4th grade tests. Each slide is dedicated to one type of question and shows them how to mark certain words and phrases out and replace them with "kid friendly" language. It also includes a reference chart slide and my STAAR reading strategy broken down into 2 slides for easily walking students through the strategy.
The presentation is perfect for showing your class as you work through reading passages together-
Start with translating questions FIRST
Next read through the story and answer your questions using the reading strategy.
