Making words is an inventive activity that allows the students to focus on word work while actively developing their phonics skills to build words with the short a pattern.
This packet is designed to be used with First Grade Reading Wonders Unit 3 Week 3 but can be used in any first grade classroom where the focus is soft c and g pattern.
Making words is an engaging activity that the students will love doing. You call out the first word. Students sound out the word and use tiles to spell out the word in front of them. (You can use a word mat or just the child’s desk top) When everyone has the word in place, you then say “ When I take away the letter n and add a w I know how to spell THAW. You keep doing this until you have called out all the words for the week and the students have spelled the words presented during the lesson (a total of 24 words with the soft c and g pattern)
This activity can be done with teacher directed whole group or in a small group setting. It could also be used as part of your station rotation for reading.
OPTIONS: Use power point slide show on board for visual learners or you can simply do the lesson orally w/o the power point show.
