Making words is an innovative activity that allows the students to focus on word work while actively developing their phonics skills to build words.
These power points and handouts follow first grade reading wonders unit 1 (weeks 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) but can be used in any first grade classroom.
Making words is an engaging activity that the students will love doing. You call out the first word. Then students sound out the word and use squares to spell out the word in front of them. (You can use a word mat or just the child’s desk top) When everyone has the word in place, you then say, “ When I take away the letter p and add h. I know how to spell hop. You keep on doing this until you have called out all the words for the week and the students have spelled the words presented during the lesson.
This activity can be done during a teacher directed whole group lesson or in a small group setting. It can also be part of your station rotation for reading groups.
