Student graphic organizer for making words activity. Making words is an early literacy word building activity that promotes the development of phonemic awareness in young readers. The teacher selects a mystery word (can be taken from guided reading selection) and breaks it down into its individual phonemes (letters). The students manipulate the different letters of the word to build 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. letter words. For example, within the word "rainbow" students can build words such as "a", "an", "ran", etc. It is especially effective for the teacher to guide the students to the desired outcome. For example, the teacher would say: "how can I add 1 letter to the word "an" to make a new 3 letter word?" The students would reply "r" to make the word "ran." This making words graphic organizer could also easily be used for a literacy center!
