Making Words is a hands-on, engaging activity where students manipulate a given set of letters to make as many words as they can. This activity will help students discover and practice letter-sound relationships as well as common spelling patterns.
This product includes 48 different Making Words sheets, four for each month that refer to themes, events, activities, and holidays for the month. The summer words can be mixed and moved to different months, based on when your school is in session. This pack makes no religious references to Christmas or Easter and is suitable for use in public schools; although it does use the words "Santa Claus" and "costume" (referring to Halloween).
There are two versions of each week: one that includes a picture clue in the upper right corner that gives a little hint to the Mystery Word, and one without the picture clue. Use the one without the picture clues for older grades or to give students an extra challenge.
HOW TO USE:
Students cut out the letters at the bottom of the page. Then they use the letters to form as many different words as they can and record them on the sheet. They will sort the words based on the number of letters: 3, 4, 5, and 6+ letter words. Then students will try to make the Mystery Word by using all of the letters. I use this as an independent activity at my Word Work station in my second grade classroom.
