These making words activities are a super fun way for your students to practice many facets of literacy: reading, phonics, spelling patterns, word families, comprehension, fluency and writing. They can be used as guided instruction during whole group (especially in kindergarten and the beginning of first grade when students are just learning how to make words) or as guided practice during reading centers.
I use them as a literacy center for my students to practice on their own or in a group while I pull small groups for guided reading instruction. Students simply click a beginning sound from down at the bottom of the tray and match it to the word family chunk at the top. They then go back and discuss with their partner(s) if the words they made are REAL or NONSENSE. It is also a great time for vocabulary discussion as they also talk about what each word means. This is super beneficial for all students, especially English Language Learners. Also included are recording sheets if you like to hold your students accountable for what they complete!
THESE ARE EDITABLE!! Don’t like the background color or want to incorporate other spelling patterns? You can edit these templates quickly and easily! Five pages of directions on how to change the background color, locked and unlocked text, the font, size and color of the text and how to group and lock text are all included with this product.
The progression of these activities follow the Reading Wonders 1st grade curriculum, but is a great supplement for any student learning to read and spell! It includes:
