This is an interactive SmartBoard lesson designed to help students practice spelling, phonics, and vocabulary skills. The lesson focuses on words in the /ap/ and /an/ word families. The words in this lesson are: cap, map, tap, rap, nap, pan, ran, tan, can, and man. Attached to the lesson (under the paperclip icon) are the letter strips (to be given to students) that go along with the lesson.
The lesson contains 14 slides. The first slide gives full instructions on how to teach a making words lesson. The second slide contains the letters in this lesson (a-c-m-n-p-r-t). When the letters are touched, a picture beginning with that sound is revealed (this lesson has only short /a/). Slides 3-12 are interactive slides that contain the letters in the lesson, spaces to spell the given word, and a pull tab with a sentence using the word in context and a visual representation of the word. Slide 13 lists all the words. It also has two boxes that students sort the words into based on their spelling. Slide 14 is for enrichment. Students are challenged to spell words that were not in the lesson but that follow the same spelling patterns in the lesson. Each word is represented by a picture. When the picture is tapped on, it reveals the correct spelling of the word.
