Students will first find out what a claim is, then read an article about the cursive writing controversy. Should cursive be taught in schools or not?
Students will then use the graphic organizer provided to write down notes and plan their essay stating their own claim.
Students will then begin to plan an essay where they will take a stand, making their own claim using specific details from the texts they read.
This activity allows students to read articles, while practicing using text details to support their claim, a common core standard of writing.
While I do not believe in test prep, this will surely be a skill students will need to do well on this year's Common Core Test, so why not have some fun with an interesting activity such as this?
