Making and breaking words refines phonemic awareness and bridges phonemic awareness to phonics.
In this activity students will view a picture of a one syllable word with the short /a/ sound in the medial position. After viewing and naming the picture, students are asked to say the word slowly to listen for the sounds in the word. Students will then use the letters provided to make the word in the boxes provided underneath the picture. These boxes help support students as they work to hear the sounds in each word, find the appropriate letters for the sounds they hear and placing them in order.
Each picture has a page that follows with a model for correctly making each word. You can use them in a center or with homework when students need a way to self check their work.
