Product Description
This lesson juxtaposes pop culture's song "Brave" and Malala Yousafzai's speech to the UN in order to spark a deep discussion and analysis of theme development across texts. Its ultimate goal is for students to be able to delineate how theme develops and how two different texts can share the same theme. With a current speech and modern song as the two texts, students will be able to make connections and see relevancy to their world as well.

This is the perfect lesson for teaching thematic development across texts for CCSS Anchor R.9!

Thematically related to:
--bullying and national bullying month
--Halloween, if you are looking to explore the idea of being brave with an out-of-the-box approach
--back to school to inspire students to be themselves
--The New Year to spark solid New Year resolutions
-- Women's History Month
