Product Description
Mama’s Nightingale tells the story of a young child named Saya, who misses her
mom because she has been arrested and put into a women’s detention center for
“illegal” immigrants. Mama is from Haiti. She does not have the papers for legal
immigration. The focus of this story is on Saya, who misses her mama, and listens
to her mama’s voice on the telephone message system. Papa writes to
lawmakers for help to release his wife, to no avail. It is Saya’s letter that was
printed in the newspaper that made the difference. A judge released Saya’s
mom.
While this story sounds complicated for young children, it is told simply, with
empathy for Saya, her Mom, and her Dad. This is the human story of immigrants
who live in the United States today without the proper papers. The nightly news
is filled with these stories.
My Guided Reading Packet reinforces the best of Reading Comprehension
Strategies, while helping students to understand the plight of modern day
immigration.
