*Man vs. Wild: Sierra Nevada Mountains (Season 1, Episode 6)
As of May 2016 every episode of Man vs. Wild is available for purchase via YouTube for $1.99 each. This makes it ideal and easy access for emergency substitute plans.
A 27-question worksheet to accompany this video where host Bear Grylls shows survival techniques in California's Sierra Nevada mountain range. This is an excellent video for science or social studies classes in grades 6-12.
Episode summary: Bear Grylls parachutes into the Sierra Nevadas, simulating the situation of the hundreds of hikers who become stranded there each year. Equipped with a knife and a canteen, Grylls travels through the alpine, woodland and chaparral areas of the mountains. He unsuccessfully tries to tame a wild horse, and eats a live snake. Using techniques gleaned from the Mono Indians, he brushes his teeth with a manzanita leaf. Most of the ground he covers is traversed by river, using a raft held together by grape vine.
Questions on the assignment go in order and will help students remain focused on key science topics.
The worksheet is given as a MS-Word document which will allow easy modifying to fit your class.
*The video needed for viewing can be purchased through a variety of sellers both as physical media or through streaming viewing (including Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, You Tube, and Discovery).
