It is important for students to know how to accurately use a compass, ruler, and straightedge. It is also important for students to understand how to create basic geometric shapes while also applying different elements and principles of design such as repetition, patterns, symmetry, and color. This lesson is designed to help students become proficient in using a compass, ruler, and straightedge to create geometric shapes while also applying the elements and principles of design. Instead of just having students draw random shapes and circles on a worksheet, and in order to let them be creative, they will create their own mandalas to integrate geometry and art. After creating the mandalas, they will be expected to identify and describe the different geometric concepts and elements and principles of design used within their work. The students will also learn information about mandalas and the history of mandalas, which will show them how geometry can be used in the real-world.
