Empathetic song increases Total Comprehensible Input (CI) (TCI) a la TPRS® and help Mandarin 1 Class stay in the target language, and reach your 90% TL goal every day even when assigning homework.
Are your students like mine when I tell them to take out their planners and write down the homework? Is there a collective groan as if this is a newsflash and not something we do every day? Do you feel a negative vibe course through the room? Yech!
This 30 second video is powerful – it give them permission to sigh, in the target language, to acknowledge that they rather be doing other things but that they realize if they want to graduate and go to college it is important.
I tend to play it twice for the full minute that it takes for the students to grab their pencils and planners or in some classes open their computers/tablets. By the third day they are singing along and yet they are with me not fighting me because through this song I am acknowledging their discomfort.
One of my colleagues joked that I should write a version of this for teachers signing about grading papers because it is important even if they don’t like it.
Seriously, every day I give homework I play this song and will continue to do until I retire!
If you like this, please see our other Transition Videos available individually or in bundles. I am just starting the Mandarin and hope to have 15 over the next few months.
Use these three steps to take charge of your transitions.
1. Make a slide for each activity in today’s lesson.
2. Insert one of my brief transition videos before the slide and train your students to watch the video in Mandarin. Soon they are imitating the voice over or else singing the song. Do this every day and when you are observed by your administrators they will note your seamless transitions.
3. Buy a remote presentation device or wireless mouse and click to the next slide from any part of the room so you can stand close to students who struggle to behave.
