This project guides students to perform background research on civil rights, social segregation, student homelessness, Jerry Spinelli, and Willie Mays prior to reading Maniac Magee. (Meets Florida Cpalms standards LAFS.6.W.2.6, LAFS.6.W.3.7, LAFS.7.W.2.6,LAFS.7.W.3.7, LAFS.8.W.2.6 and LAFS.8.W.3.) (Common Core standards CCRA.W.6, CCRA.W.7, and CCRA.W.8) Though a group project, it simulates a real-life cooperative environment where each person has a role in developing the final product.
Place students in groups prior to allowing them to choose their roles. Depending on grade level of students, I recommend having younger students submit research for review prior to developing presentations and giving more time for younger students to complete each section. As written, this project allows two class periods for research and two class periods to develop a presentation for oral reports. Alternatively, the research could be accomplished as homework and class time used to develop the group presentation.
Presentations can take any form you choose – Google Slides, PowerPoint, Prezi, Posters, Thinglink, TES Blendspace, Imovie, PuppetPal app, etc. or allow students to choose how to present findings.
A rubric for the final presentation, as well as answer keys are provided for your convenience.
