This is a reading strategies guide for the novel Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli. Rather than provide questions for each chapter, it provides prompts to help students use different reading strategies including pre-reading, questioning, predicting, inferring, visualizing, connecting and context clues. The guide is scaffolded. In the first 2 parts of the novel, students are prompted on what reading strategies to use and how to use them. As the guide continues into the 3rd section students are asked to choose appropriate strategies on their own. In addition the front part of the guide includes a KWL chart, a prediction chart, a character description chart, a setting chart, and a list of age appropriate vocabulary words. I have used this guide as an introduction to reading strategies for 6th graders but it could also be appropriated for 5th graders.
