Literature discussion guides are a great way for teachers to assess to the literal and inferential comprehension of students. In the Maniac Magee packet there is a reading pacing guide for students to follow. There are also questions for each chapter of the book. Towards the end of the packet students examine the author's craft while analyzing characters to determine how they change throughout the story. The packet can be used as an assessment tool and a way to monitor student comprehension in book discussions. Students can use the packets in book group meetings to generate talking points.
