This Cultures of Thinking Activity (3-2-1 Bridge) asks students to think about what happens when a country expands it borders into another country. In this case, what happened when the US moved westward. This activity also uses the painting American Progress as a way of getting students to think of the consequences of westward expansion. Students will do the COT activity on their own, share with the class their answers, and then pair up with a neighbor to discuss the elements in the painting. Finally, they do the 3-2-1 Bridge again in light of this new information. I have found their answers can change greatly.
