Manifest Destiny Lesson
This wonderful lesson engages all learning styles and encourages student creativity. Included is a fantastic graphic organizer of the famous John Gast painting "American Progress" with boxes on top of it for students to record notes about the various groups.
Seven short readings tell students about who was headed out west and why. After reading, groups of students will act out 1 minute scenes portraying Mormons, 49ers, Homesteaders, etc. The rest of the class then adds details from the scenes to their notes page.
I have had some memorable moments with this lesson and students acting like horses, cowboys, and more and it definitely helped them to remember key vocabulary like the Homestead Act and exodusters.
For differentiation, a completed set of notes is included in a separate powerpoint if you would like to provide essential information for your students.
Also included are 2 pages of graphic organizer notes, 4 pages of readings (half page reading for each group), and 2 powerpoint presentations.
