Engage your students in visually mapping out the expansion of the United States up to the Civil War as they color in the United States to reflect the growth of free and slave states. This activity helps students trace the chronological expansion along with applying the different dimensions of the compromises passed in an effort to prevent war. This activity contains a detailed two-page instructions sheet for students that helps direct them as to what to color as free, slave, or popular sovereignty. In addition, for each student direction, some background historical information is given to help students understand either the acquisition or decision for the area to be free, slave, or popular sovereignty. With the directions, certain areas are outlined or labeled as reference to the acquisition, such as the Oregon Territory.
Product includes teacher guide, 2-page student instructions, a map for students, and closing activity accounting for the balance of free and slave states throughout the period leading up to the Civil War (answers are provided for the closing activity).
