This activity works well in an 11th grade US History class to analyze the positive and negative aspects of manifest destiny from a variety of perspectives. The lesson is organized on a Power Point presentation that can be easily modified to better serve your needs.
The structure of the lesson is as follows:
1. Warm Up- POV Activity Discussion:
a. What were some of the positive aspects of Manifest Destiny/westward expansion?
b. What were some of the negative or potential growing problems that could have developed as a Manifest Destiny/westward expansion?
2. Categorization Wrap Up
a. Individuals will choose one of the 2 category topics below to sort at least 10 of the 14 key terms.
i. Once you’ve placed the item, write 1-2 sentences explaining why you placed the item in this category.
b. Choose either:
i. Social/Political/Economic OR
ii. States’ Rights / Federal Power
3. Have both categorization charts on the white board. Have student come up and write down the terms where they think they belong.
