Dasrath Manjhi was a true person who lived on the poor side of a mountain. People in his village had to walk up and down the mountain, or around the mountain to work, to go to school, and to get medical attention. When Manjhi’s wife got hurt trying to climb the mountain, he decided to chisel a road through the mountain to create one village where equality would reign. It took him 22 years to carve through the mountain!
I have created a Guided Reading Packet for students to understand where India is in the world, where this story took place, and to use their comprehension strategies as they read this amazing story. Students will synthesize their knowledge as they compare an actual magazine article with the book to learn more about Dasrath Manjhi, write a letter to Manjhi, telling him why is a hero, write a sensory poem about Manjhi as he chisels his way through the mountain, etc.
