Let students explore different types of maps while observing the common features they all share! This lesson starts with a Powerpoint presentation describing common features of maps. Then students can rotate through five maps with an observation sheet and questions relevant to each individual map. Regroup as a class and discuss their findings with the maps on your Powerpoint! Maps work best printed in color.
The second activity includes an introduction worksheet to using different map features. Students practice reading the town map to answer the questions. Afterwards they follow the rubric to create their own town map incorporating all of the map features. A pre-made map is available for use, or for more of a challenge have students create their own!
This activity comes in two parts for your convenience. The Powerpoint presentation includes the description of each common feature and the five maps for review after the gallery walk. The PDF file has all of the printables available. Keys are included for both activities.
