Map Skill Creative Activity Creating a Childhood Map. This childhood Map activity is intended to help students understand the relationship between the details required of their own map with other maps that will be used throughout the year.
Included in this zipped file is:
-Childhood Mapping Activity handout (2 pages)
-Editable Parent letter
-Reflection and Grading Rubric
-Childhood Map Example

Most files are saved in PDF except the editable parent letter.
The activity begins with the following directions…
You have been asked by the Childhood Mapping Committee (CMC) to create a map of your own childhood neighborhood where you grew up. This could be where you live right now or another neighborhood where you lived before. The CMC will be collecting all maps and putting them into an atlas to be sold to museums all over the world. In order for your map to be accepted, be sure to follow all guidelines specified below. If you would like to share your map to the CMC when you are finished, you will have the opportunity to do so and to also explain some of the other stories about your childhood neighborhood.
Your Childhood Map must include:
- Your name (first and last) at the top of the page
- The city and state of your neighborhood
- Any necessary street/road names
- Names of neighbors that you can remember
- A compass rose with accurate directions
- At least 5 different events or other memorable places that you can remember about your childhood neighborhood
