This lesson teaches students the 9 essential elements of a map using the handy acronym TODALSIGS. The lesson includes a powerpoint naming each of the 9 essential elements and why they're necessary. Pictures of each are included to increase the likelihood students will remember them. Following the notes, the powerpoint includes a suggested assignment where students use what they just learned about the most important parts of a map to create a map of the classroom. Editable instructions for the assignment are included, as well as friendly tips to help students complete the activity, and a sample map so students will know what their final product should look like.
The entire document is editable. Therefore, it can be used for many different grade levels and the classroom map assignment can be differentiated as necessary.
