Before I start a Geography unit I have the students come up with definitions for these terms on their own without resources. Then they discuss what they have with a partner. In the next step they write a story with a partner (I have also had classes do all of these steps on their own instead of a partner). Then they will read their story to the class using these terms properly. I have the class vote on the best story and they can not vote for their own. Then I give bonus to the winning story. It's a fun activity that seems to work at the beginning of a unit.
