Mapping Diction: Close Reading for Connotative Diction and Overall Meaning

This graphic organizer will walk your students through the close reading of a quotation from any text. Designed for use with short quotes, the organizer asks students first to define any words they don't know and next to consider the connotative meanings of words, look for patterns, find connections between connotative words, and keep the overall effect central to their analysis.

This download contains a color version and a grayscale version. You'll also find teacher tips for using the organizer with your classes. Enjoy!
