I suggest using an 11x17 piece of paper for the maps but an 8x11 piece of paper will work. Please make at least two copies of each map.
Depending on the age level of your students this mapping activity will take at least 1 to 2 class periods. Students just follow simple instructions to complete the maps. The mapping activity is in Word and can be easily modified by the teacher to work with any atlas or age level. My students enjoy this activity and it helps them visualize and learn the geography of Minnesota and the Midwest. For the state of Minnesota mapping I either use a website/Google Maps to help my students find the cities and physical features as a class. When I do the Minnesota map as a class, it usually takes a whole class period. I also ask my students if they have been to any of the cities or locations we are mapping and I talk a little bit about each city or physical feature. It is great way to learn more about your students and help them map Minnesota correctly.
