Study of the electron transport chain of photosynthesis and cell respiration is an integral part of any biology class. Electron Transport Chains can be a complex topic, but they are also essential for understanding how photosynthesis and cellular respiration work. Having the students get up, move around, collaborate together, think critically, and be creative can engage most students no matter what the level of ability.
Mind Mapping can boost engagement, long term retention of material, and help students see the connections between process and outcome. The use of Mind Maps helps students see the connection between the words and process. They help to use the whole brain and not segregate knowledge.
By the end of this activity, the student should be able to demonstrate (a) that knowledge of names of the different parts of Electron Transport Chain components, (b) verbally, visually, and in writing the differences between the reactants and products of the ETC, (c) describe visually and in writing how the flow of electrons and protons create enough energy for ATP to form, (d) the ability to organize the reactants and products of cellular respiration, and (e) that the parts of the electron transport chain are interactive with / dependent upon each other.
Included in this activity are answer keys, tips for formative assessment, tips how to address common misconceptions, and a finished sample diagram for guidance.
At least 20-30 minutes total in order to give instructions, perform mapping activity, provide closing/summary statements, and answer follow-up questions. Follow-up questions can be given for homework.
