Map Vocabulary Flashcards by Miss Middle School Teacher

This is a set of common mapping vocabulary terms along with their definitions. They're great to copy on card stock and laminate. I use them when teaching the parts of a map in several ways:

1) When students finish an activity early, they can grab a set of flashcards and practice matching the terms with the definitions.

2) Students can partner up to match the terms to the definitions. Then, they play 'Go Fish''. They deal 4 cards to each person and place the rest in a messy pile face down for all to reach. They then ask questions, like: "Do you have the term that describes a person who makes maps?". Their partner may reply, "Yes, I have cartographer." Or, "No, go fish!". When a pair is found, the partner takes the pair. Once all pairs have been matched, students count their pairs. The person with the greatest number of pairs at the end wins!

3) Students can partner up to match the terms to the definitions. Then, they play 'Memory''. They place all cards face down on the table in rows. The first partner turns over two cards (leaving them in their position). If the term and definition match, they keep the pair. If not, they turn them back over and hope to remember their location for later. Play continues until all matches have been found. The person with the greatest number of pairs at the end wins!

4) Students can also play "Memory" individually with themselves and try to 'beat the clock'. They can set a time limit for themselves (i.e. 2 minutes) and see if they can find all of the matches in that time.

Terms covered in this set: map, scale, inset, equator, prime meridian, parallel, latitude, longitude, legend, meridian, compass rose, cartographer, hemisphere. Additional blank cards are included for you to add your own vocabulary and/or map puzzlers!
