This is a mini-unit that I have created for my 4th grade Social Studies class. It would be appropriate for grades 3-9. The unit includes...
***Instructional SMARTboard lesson
*The SMARTboard lesson is a 15 page instructional lesson that includes interactive parts and video links.
It covers the following topics:
-Types of Maps: Political Maps, Physical Maps, Thematic Maps, Historical Maps, Road Maps, & Weather Maps
-Map Parts: Map Key, Map Scale, Symbols, Boundaries, Longitude & Latitude, Landforms
*The map notes are arranged in grid form with an area for kids to write a definition and draw/write an example. I’ve included an answer key for grading and/or for kids with special needs/writing difficulties.
*The quiz is a 4 page quiz that includes multiple choice, drawing & labeling, map reading, and short answer/paragraph answers. I’ve included the answer key for easy grading.
*The project is SUPER fun! It asks students to create a country of their own and create three maps using various skills/concepts that they have learned. I usually do this in partners, but it could be done individually or in groups. The kids have a great time with this, and there are TONS of possibilities for extension activities across many disciplines! (Ex: I’ve done writing activities based on their countries.)
